Sign of the Times

Withered FlowerI'm getting old. I know I'm getting old because a childhood friend of mine, a guy I used to play with during my pre teen years and early teen years but haven't seen since, has died. Cancer is at fault, but regardless: this is the first time someone I know and have been in close contact with as a peer dies.
One encounters multiple signs of growing old as one moves through life. There was the stage when all my friends got married. Then there was the stage when most of my friends had children. Then there was the stage when some of my friends got a divorce. Death, however, sets the ante up much higher.

As I see it no one really gets old these days, yes you are getting married, divorced, employed etc’ but nothing really change, you are still behave as you did when you were 21.
40 years ago, people had changed when they got old, they become serious, sad, strict.

In the new age you can’t survive if you get old, so you just stay young and then die.

"you can’t survive if you get old": Is there anyone in particular out there, hunting you down? Take it easy.
Otherwise, spoken like someone well and truly without children to look after.
